Valentine’s Day – February 14 – is a long-standing tradition in many parts of the world. The history of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery, but it’s no mystery that this holiday has long been a significant time for expressions of love. From the first Valentine greeting card created in the U.S. in the 1840s to instant, on-line Valentines, the medium may change but the message stays the same

So this seems like a perfect time to make a commitment to love by starting a new tradition: Date Night.

This is a regular weekly event, scheduled in your calendar, and is subject to change only in a dire emergency. It’s dinner with your spouse, or an afternoon picnic with your child, lunch with Mom or a long walk with a friend.

It’s the time to turn off the cell phone and pager and television, and devote yourself to quality time with someone important to you.

About 4 years ago, on Valentines Day my wife and I made the commitment to each other to do a Date Night every Thursday night. We’ve written it on our calendars – hers, mine and kitchen – in ink, every week through the end of the year.

We explore new restaurants, see movies, “double date” with friends we don’t see nearly enough, attend concerts, But no shopping!

Will you join us this month in starting a new tradition with someone you love?

Make it a Great Day!
